Jimmy Spithill (USA team Oracle’s captain) has recently declared that team New Zealand is his favorite and he would really like it if team NZ will compete with team Oracle in the 2017 America’s Cup finals.
The captains of all the six teams which are going to compete in the America’s Cup which is going to be held in the year 2017 came together in London for the very first time for a press conference on the 9th of September, 2014.
Along with the skippers of Artemis, Luna Ross and team NZ (the challengers of the 2013 America’s Cup) and team Oracle (defending champions of the 2013 America’s Cup), the captains of two new teams namely team France and Ben Ainslie Racing were also a part of the press conference.
Spithill made it clear during the press conference that the line-up for the America’s Cup 2017 seems strong but team NZ has to be his favorite because of its history and experience. He also thinks the new sailing teams have the capacity to surprise the sailing world with their individual performances. The way he interacted in the conference, it surely seemed that Spithill is wary of team New Zealand.
Dean Barker (skipper of team NZ) expressed his disappointment in relation to the team’s performance in the 2013 America’s Cup and said that now the team has got the time to understand its mistake and improve its performance.
No major details were revealed about the 35th season of America’s Cup. However, the press conference confirmed that Luna Rossa was going to negotiate the terms associated with the 35th America’s Cup.
Max Sirena (captain of Luna Rossa) has put forward an idea of a challenger committee that will negotiate the rules and regulations of the 2017 America’s Cup so that all the teams can work together and take decisions collectively.
